The district's Music Department continues to provide students with exceptional learning and growth opportunities. Last week, experiences ranged from collaborating with professional musicians and educators to attending world-class performances. Each event enriched students’ musical understanding and offered valuable insights into careers in music.

Below are the highlights, which reflect the district’s ongoing commitment to expanding access to high-quality arts education and empowering student musicians to reach their full potential.

The Brighton Beat Takes on a Rhythmic Journey – April 21

Port Chester High School jazz students had the opportunity to learn from The Brighton Beat, a dynamic Afrobeat ensemble known for blending global musical styles. The group began with a concert that introduced students to the cultural roots and evolution of Afrobeat, funk, and jazz.

After the performance, students participated in small group sessions with the musicians, receiving individualized coaching on technique and style. The workshop concluded with a collaborative performance of an original piece composed by The Brighton Beat—an inspiring showcase of musical creativity and teamwork.

“To see our students immediately feel so welcomed and integrated into this ensemble was truly heartwarming," said Band Director Isaac Schneider. "They were exposed to an entire new universe of sound and emotions, and participated with great enthusiasm."

Lessons in Music & Service from the U.S. Army Brass Band – April 22

The 42nd Infantry Division’s Bear Mountain Brass Band visited Port Chester High School for a thrilling concert and Q&A session with students. Comprised of nine elite musicians from the U.S. Army Band, the group performed an engaging set that included pop, jazz, funk, and fusion.

Following the performance, students had the chance to ask questions about music careers, the role of music in the military, and life after high school. The visit was especially meaningful as one of the performers—Mr. Solomon Elyaho, orchestra teacher at JFK and King Street—is a proud member of the ensemble.

“It is an incredible opportunity to have musicians from all different walks of life perform for our students," said Schneider. "This ensemble embodies the true purpose of music-making as a lifelong journey, and I’m confident this enduring commitment to music will remain with our students for years to come."

Orchestra Club Levels Up with Larchmont Music Academy – April 22

In preparation for their first-ever appearance at the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Majors, Orchestra Club students received expert coaching from faculty at the Larchmont Music Academy. During the session, students performed their repertoire and received detailed feedback on technique, expression, and ensemble cohesion.

The visit helped students understand what NYSSMA judges look for and boosted their confidence as they prepare for the performance. This collaboration exemplifies the Music Department’s focus on growth through meaningful community partnerships.

Orchestra Students Experience the NY Philharmonic in Action – April 25

Port Chester High School orchestra students attended an open rehearsal of the New York Philharmonic at Lincoln Center. They observed the professional ensemble preparing for that evening’s concert, gaining firsthand insight into the discipline, precision, and professionalism required at the highest level.

This inspiring field trip exposed students to world-class musicianship and reinforced the high standards they strive for in their own performances.
