Smart Scholars Early College Experience Lights the Path to College and Beyond

Now in its first year at Port Chester High School, the Smart Scholars Early College Experience is a dual enrollment program that allows students to earn up to 24 transferable college credits—entirely free—while still in high school. Designed to bridge the gap between high school and college, the program strengthens college readiness and promotes long-term academic success.

The Smart Scholars program begins in 9th grade and is offered through a grant-funded partnership with Westchester Community College (WCC). Students take rigorous, college-level courses taught by Port Chester teachers in collaboration with WCC adjunct professors. Built-in academic support helps them develop the skills, confidence, and mindset needed to thrive in college and beyond.

Dual enrollment means students are simultaneously earning both high school and college credit for the same course—an opportunity that can reduce the time and cost of a college degree. While the Smart Scholars program offers a structured path for eligible students, dual enrollment courses at Port Chester High School are open to all students, regardless of Smart Scholars participation.

The district’s dual enrollment offerings continue to expand. In addition to core academic subjects, students can earn college credit through music and theatre courses, with plans to include art courses in the future. Port Chester also offers dual enrollment opportunities through a separate partnership with Manhattanville College, broadening access to advanced coursework across subject areas.

Beyond academics, the Smart Scholars program includes summer workshops—offered in partnership with the Carver Center—that teach students essential life skills such as time management, communication, study strategies, and navigating the college application process.

“Smart Scholars was created to provide meaningful opportunities for students who want to challenge themselves,” said Diantha Barone, Assistant Principal at Port Chester High School and Coordinator of the Smart Scholars program. “As the former Assistant Principal at the middle school, it’s incredibly rewarding to see the same students I watched grow up now in high school—lighting up with excitement when they realize what’s possible for their future.”

With growing partnerships, expanded course offerings, and a commitment to college and career readiness, Port Chester’s dual enrollment opportunities—including Smart Scholars—are transforming students' high school experience, opening doors for them to pursue their goals with confidence.
