The International Thespian Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society recently hosted a Murder Mystery Masquerade Ball. An annual tradition that began in 2021, the event raises funds for both programs and encourages all affiliated organizations, families and friends to attend. While it is an opportunity for students to use the performance skills they’ve learned, it also allows them to build connections in the local community.
“We initially thought of the idea because we wanted to have a unique fundraising event unlike others at Port Chester High School,” said Theatre Director and International Thespian Society Faculty Advisor Christina Baurle. “The concept requires participants to have fun getting into character, dress up, and work together to solve the mystery. The theme is timely, as it always takes place close to Halloween, and it’s a fun bonding experience for students in both theater and music.”
In line with the “masquerade ball” theme, each participant received a character description and name-tag upon entry. Taking on their new roles, they opened envelopes containing instructions for the tasks they needed to complete.
The game was broken into three rounds:
* The Exposition, where participants met and greeted each other;
* Corroboration of Evidence to Identify the Victim; and,
* Unveiling Theories to Solve the Mystery
During the game, players snapped photos, enjoyed some snacks, and bought raffle tickets and merchandise. Even the staff got involved in the fun!
“I love that there are students who are willing to break out of their comfort zones,” said Orchestra Teacher & Tri-M Music Honor Society Faculty Advisor Melissa Neyer. “It felt like we had more to give this year. The Orchestra Club prepared and performed a spooky song, and anticipation for the event continues to build.”
