The Special Education Department is making the most of the summer with a focused effort on supporting students, strengthening services, and preparing for a successful school year ahead.
At the heart of this work is the Extended School Year (ESY) program, led by a team of special education teachers, aides, therapists, and support staff. Designed to help students retain essential skills and continue progressing toward their IEP goals, ESY offers targeted instruction in a safe and welcoming environment—thanks in large part to ongoing collaboration with the buildings and grounds crew.
As part of a meaningful annual tradition, Superintendent Dr. Aurelia Henriquez recently joined Director of Special Education Tatiana Memoli for a bus ride home with ESY students. This hands-on gesture allows leaders to personally greet families and connect with students, reinforcing the district’s commitment to relationships rooted in visibility, compassion, and community.
Behind the scenes, the Committees on Special Education (CSE) and Committees on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) have been actively reviewing and responding to the evolving needs of students with disabilities. Building on last year’s success in securing over $1 million through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Grant, the department continues to expand and enhance services districtwide.
In tandem, the team is completing critical state reporting requirements and preparing targeted professional development to support new hires and returning staff during Superintendent’s Conference Days.
With thoughtful planning, hands-on leadership, and meaningful progress already underway, the district is laying a strong foundation to advance inclusive practices and promote student success in the 2025–26 school year and beyond.
