Introduction to Playwriting

Playwrights have used their creativity and writing talents throughout history to produce a wide range of expressive, informative, and entertaining plays. Introduction to Playwriting is a workshop course that will explore writing for the theater through practice and discussion. Students will study major components of Playwriting, including character dialogue and narrative structure, emphasizing a play's arc through its beginning, turning point, and ending. Students will learn to write monologues, skits, scenes, one-act plays, musical numbers, and more individually and in small groups. They will give and receive peer feedback and critique the work of professional playwrights to better understand the foundation of theatrical productions: the text.

Open to grades 9-12.
