Port Chester High School’s music program continues to make waves, with students and visiting performers alike showcasing excellence, inspiration, and real-world musical experiences.

Sophomore clarinetist Naiah Talatala has earned a remarkable honor as one of just 12 finalists selected from across Westchester County for the Yonkers Philharmonic Orchestra’s 47th Annual Young Artists Concerto Competition. Open to high school musicians countywide, the highly competitive process began with recorded auditions reviewed by judges.

Naiah’s achievement is especially notable, as she advanced to the final round as a 10th grader—an uncommon accomplishment in such a competitive field. She will perform Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A Major, accompanied by PCHS Choir Director Mr. Pereira, with the opportunity to be named one of three winners. Selected winners will go on to perform live with the Yonkers Philharmonic Orchestra and receive cash awards.

In addition to celebrating student success, PCHS band students recently had the opportunity to learn from collegiate musicians during a special visit from the Crane Latin Ensemble of SUNY Potsdam. The 28-member ensemble, composed of highly accomplished music majors, visited PCHS as part of a regional tour.

Students enjoyed a dynamic performance featuring a mix of Latin standards, jazz, and contemporary pieces, followed by a Q&A session with the performers. A highlight of the visit was the return of PCHS alumnus Daniel Maldonado (Class of 2023), now studying music education at SUNY Potsdam. His presence offered students a powerful example of what’s possible beyond high school.

Together, these experiences reflect the strength of the PCHS music program, where students are not only achieving at high levels, but also connecting with the broader world of music in meaningful and inspiring ways.
